Artificial rain, also known as cloud seeding, is a process of artificially inducing or increasing precipitation through clouds by adding external agents. The foreign particles, such as dry ice (solid carbon dioxide), silver iodide, salt powder, and others, are dispersed over the clouds through methods like cloud seeding, typically carried out by airplanes or rockets. The goal is to stimulate the clouds and promote the formation of raindrops.

 

The process of artificial rain involves several stages:

  1. Agitation: Chemicals are used to stimulate the air mass upwind of the target area, causing it to rise and form clouds. These chemicals absorb water vapor and aid in the process of condensation. Examples of chemicals used include calcium oxide, a compound of urea and ammonium nitrate, or chloride calcium carbonate.
  2. Building Up Stage: In this stage, the mass of the cloud is built up using substances like urea, dry ice, kitchen salt, etc., to increase the density of the clouds.
  3. Seeding: The final stage involves the use of super-cooled chemicals, such as dry ice or iodide, which are released from pressurized canisters onto the base of the clouds. This promotes the formation of beads of water that eventually fall as rain.

The concept is likened to the process of adding alum to a water tank with impurities and dust particles. The alum acts as a catalyst, causing the particles to collide, become heavy, and settle down. Similarly, in the clouds, charged particles are suspended and too small to fall as rain. By spraying an agent over the clouds, these particles collide, become heavy, and fall as rain.

The motivation behind artificial rain is to address situations where there are clouds but no rain. By influencing the cloud conditions, artificial rain can be employed to alleviate drought and water scarcity in specific regions.

While artificial rain is a captivating and promising technique in weather modification, it does have limitations and environmental considerations. Ongoing research and technological advancements may contribute to refining and expanding the application of artificial rain as a tool to manage water resources and mitigate the impacts of drought in a more sustainable manner.
